For 29-year-old Joanna Larson, the desire to return home to take part in the operation of her family farm in Sheyenne has as much to do with building community as it does with farming. A strong independent streak also doesn’t hurt.

There will be a very special event held in Devils Lake in the Memorial Building on Saturday, April 27 to benefit DeAnn Brown for help with medical expenses and travel.

Every year since firefighting began in North Dakota the NDFA has held its convention in a different community around the state. This year it is Devils Lake’s turn to host the 300 to 350 firefighters who normally attend this special gathering. Many of them will bring their spouses with them, as well, temporarily increasing the population of the area considerably.

The work of North Dakota game wardens is so much more than checking hunting and fishing licenses. The men and women wearing a badge and working the frontlines of game and fish law enforcement are the first called when a hunter has a question or a landowner is dealing with deer depredation. They’re the individuals keeping personal watercraft operators safe while making sure poachers aren’t taking more fish and wildlife than legally allowed.

A special guest came to teach the fifth grade students at CMS on Thursday. U.S. history teacher Kevin Baumgarn invited Rep. Kathy Frelich, R-ND, who oversees the 15th District which includes Ramsey County to teach about the legislative process in his class. Frelich gave students background on the process of bills and what is required by law if someone wants to run for legislative office.
